History of Molasses

Molasses results when sugar is crystallized out of sugar cane or sugar beet juice. In 1733 the Molasses Act was passed imposing duties on all molasses and sugar that came into the North America Colonies. The British parliament created the act at the insistence of large plantation owners in the British West Indies. The act was passed to regulate trade by making British products cheaper than those from the French West Indies and not for the purpose of raising revenue.

In January 1919 a molasses storage tank owned by the Purit Distilling Co. burst, sending 12,000 tons of thick brown, sugary molasses from the broken steel tank. Molasses two-story high, swept through the streets of North End of Boston without any warning at 35 miles per hour. Twenty one were left dead and over one hundred and fifty were injured in the aftermath. The clean up lasted for weeks. The main cause of the disaster was faulty construction.
